2. Perform a Dye Test

Toilets are a common source of household leaks and can go undetected for long periods of time. A dye test is a quick and easy way to determine if your toilet is leaking. Perform a dye test by dropping some special dye or food coloring into the tank of your toilet. (Use caution when using food coloring as it can dye your toilet bowl) Let the dye settle in the tank for a few minutes and then check to see if any color has seeped into the bowl. If so, that means you have a faulty flush seal.

3. Check Your Water Heater

Water heaters are other common fixtures that can be prone to leaks. If you suspect a leak, make sure to check around the base of the heater and inspect the pressure relief valve. Many pressure relief valves are plumbed directly into the basement floor drain so it may be difficult to detect the leak and might require the attention of a plumber.

4. Water Meter

If you have checked all your fixtures and still cannot find the root of the problem, checking your outdoor water meter can be a last resort. This method is good for determining if you have a leak with your main supply line under the ground. In order for this to work you must shut off the water to your home and monitor any changes in the meter. If the meter continues to run, it indicates a leak.
